CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Sweet Grass County, Montana

Hollow Tree Cabin, Absaroka Wilderness

January 2006

I hear boots stomp, and suddenly Luke is stumbling through the door, his beard—he has grown one!—flecked with wet snow. I gasp in surprised delight.

“Ah, shelter!” he exclaims as he sheds his stuffed-full rucksack and pulls off his ski mask. His damp, matted hair pops out in all directions. He bounds over and wraps me in his arms. I sink into his warmth.

“Lots to tell you, darlin’,” he announces. “But first . . .”

“First what?”

Sometimes—most times, actually, when it comes to this subject—I’m slow to catch hints. So it takes me a moment to get what he’s getting at. After about three seconds, I do and smile, sheepishly, I’m sure. Luke calls it my little-kid smile. He says it’s a certain smile I never show in public, reserved for times like these.

“Oh,” I reply lamely.

He laughs.

“Where is that bed of yours? Been so long I forgot.”

I took his hand.

“Let me help you remember,” I say.
